Baja California Sur Nature and Sea Turtles

May 1, 20150

On a recent trip to Baja California Sur, which is the state that makes up the southern half of the Baja peninsula, I got to spend an amazing day and night with RED Travel Mexico. RED is half tour operator, half non-profit conducting sea turtle research in the secluded paradises of Baja. Working and playing with RED is an experience that demands your complete attention to nature in an indescribable way.

It is worthy of your bucket list, and I can’t wait to go back and spend more time with them in the desert under the stars.

Virtual Tour of a Day with RED in Magdalena Bay

RED chooses their locations carefully, and this one in Magdalena Bay happened to be on the other end of this dirt road.

At the end of the road, we got into boats…

to this spot where we got to climb all over the massive sand dunes.

After running around like little kids for a good half hour, we gathered back at the shore for a triggerfish ceviche lunch.

Then we got into kayaks to paddle out to camp.

Kayaking Magdalena Bay

Camp was impressive. Tents scattered among sand dunes, such that you would almost missed them if you didn’t know they were there. And the bathroom simply opened up to the wilderness.

After settling in, we had a brief lesson about sea turtle conservation and monitoring.

And then we got to put it to action by helping measure the sea turtles and record data ourselves.

After which we celebrated the sunset with margaritas on the beach.

The campfire under the stars that night was amazing, you’ll have to watch the video for that one.

In the morning, I got up early in the fog to take a walk on the beach.

Sadly, this good thing had to come to an end, and we departed in an eery silence through the fog, leaving behind a place that I know none of us will ever forget.
