Blue Whale Watching in Loreto Bay, Baja California Sur

April 24, 20151

The blue whale is the largest mammal on the planet. According to our guide on a recent trip to Mexico, their hearts alone are about the size of a Volkswagen Beetle. They can grow to 30 meters in length, weighing up to 190 tons, although I have no idea how anyone would be able to measure that.

On a beautiful March morning in Loreto Bay, Baja California Sur, we were picked up right on the beach of our hotel by our tour boat (Danzante Tours) to ride the glassy waters out to see how many whales we could spot that day.

We were in for a treat.

The whales were out to play. It didn’t take long before we spotted our first one, which was followed by many more, including some mamas with their babies.

Massive.

I can’t quite describe what it felt like to be trailing these incredible animals as such a close distance, but I held my breath more than once expecting them to surface right next to us. We nearly jumped out of our skin a couple times when they surprised us from behind with their blow holes.

The blue whales migrate into the Sea of Cortez during the winter months, and Loreto Bay is an optimal place for whale watching. I can recommend arranging a tour with Danzante Tours at Villa del Palmar, both our driver and our guide Carlos went above and beyond what we were expecting to provide us with an experience we will never forget.

This experience would be an ideal addition to an adventure getaway or honeymoon in Baja California Sur.
