Travel insurance can be a complicated subject with such a wide range of options for coverage and providers.
Here’s the bottom line: if you have a travel credit card (usually any credit card that offers 0% foreign transaction fees, travel rewards, etc.) you will have a certain amount of coverage automatically included on your card as long as you purchase your flight with said card.
With a good travel credit card, you may only need two other kinds of insurance, so it’s important you start by checking your credit card benefits.

Double check your credit cards, but this coverage usually includes:
The kicker here is trip delay. With a good (usually for a higher annual fee) travel credit card like the Chase Sapphire Reserve that I have, you’ll be eligible to claim expenses for a delay as short as 6 hours (double check your card).
I do not prioritize buying any extra travel insurance for the above features, because it’s a waste of money. These benefits come with my card and are already paid for in my annual fee.
Two important features that credit card insurance lacks are:
SafetyWing travel medical insurance is the one travel insurance I ALWAYS buy, for EVERY trip.
For nomads by nomads: Access a qualified global network of hospitals and doctors for unexpected medical problems and accidents. Includes coverage for: Doctors, Hospitals, Emergency medical evacuation. Also includes coverage for travel delay, lost checked luggage, emergency response & natural disasters, personal liability.
Only $45 per 4 weeks for worldwide travel medical coverage (ages 18-39, other ages available). This is 1/3rd price compared to biggest competitor for similar coverage. Get a quote with SafetyWing travel medical insurance.
*This is my personal favorite go-to travel insurance, I always get it, no matter the trip.
CFAR covers you for just that – ANY reason. But you generally need to purchase coverage as soon as you have made an investment in your trip, i.e. booking a flight or putting a deposit down for a trip, as many CFAR policies require purchase within a certain timeframe. With CFAR, your investment is covered immediately.
World Nomads offers CFAR and medical and everything else you might need. It’s a great one-stop shop for travel insurance.
If you don’t need extra bells and whistles, no CFAR, no trip delay, etc., get medical coverage with SafetyWing and be on your way!
World Nomads covers people from 140 countries, with medical and evacuation cover, 24-hour emergency assistance and over 150 adventure activities. Get a quote below.
