What is Snuba?
If you’ve never tried or heard of snuba before, allow me to introduce you. Similar to snorkeling, you wear a mask but don’t need to carry any other equipment.
Similar to scuba diving, you breathe through a hose. The hose is attached to an air compressor at the surface, which feeds air to you as needed. You can put on a weight belt if you choose, which helps you dive deeper, but you can only go as far as the hose will allow.

The idea is that you can breathe easily and go deeper under water than snorkeling without having to be scuba certified or carry all that gear.
If you try it in the right place, meaning if there really is a good reef and lots of fish to explore, I believe it could be very rewarding. I found it easier to breathe through the snuba hose than through a snorkel, and it completely removed the stress component of water getting into the snorkel and therefore the air supply (for those of us with water issues).
Who is snuba for?
I think it’s best for people who have not scuba dived before. I imagine that if I were a certified diver, I would think snuba would be too boring and not worth it, knowing that I’ve already been there and done that to a much bigger extent.
Those of us who struggle with snorkeling (meaning we have fears of water), and those of us who have an adventurous side but haven’t ever scuba dived are who I think would be the best candidates for snuba.
We tried snuba in Baja California Sur at Villa del Palmar in Loreto. Watch the video to see what it looks like so you can decide if it’s something you’d like to experience yourself!
