Inflatable SUP Stand Up Paddle Board Review

September 6, 20163

If you like exploring the great outdoors, fishing, being on the water, and taking in the serenity of nature, pay attention. Stand up paddle boarding may not be new, but more and more people are discovering it every day, like I did this summer.

Two factors led me to try paddle boarding this year:

  1. I no longer had the canoe I used to own and loved to get out on the water with
  2. I sprained my ankle, which meant I couldn’t run, hike, or do any of my normal outdoor activities. So, I tried out a friend’s inflatable SUP.

The Best Inflatable SUP

I was skeptical at first; I wasn’t sure how sturdy it would be. It’s “inflatable,” does that mean it’s going to pop on me while I’m in the middle of a lake? This is where I tell you that the best thing for you to do is to rent or borrow an inflatable board and test it out for yourself.

The quality and durability is incredible and will immediately quash any doubts you have about stability. Once it’s blown up, you wouldn’t know it is even inflatable. I was sold, and I knew this meant one thing: I needed to get one for myself.

I’m now the proud owner of my own white iRocker 11′ inflatable SUP. When it comes to choosing one length over the other (iRocker has 10′ and 11′), you could consider your body size, but it mainly comes down to a bit more stability in longer boards, and sometimes it’s just a preference of color!

What’s Included in the SUP Package

The package came with:

  • Paddle board (6″ thick)
  • Extendable paddle
  • Detachable Fin(s)
  • Pump
  • Repair kit
  • Ankle leash
  • Carrying Bag/Backpack: all of the above items fit nicely inside this bag that zips closed

BOOM.

The board also has bungee cords criss-crossing in the front, this is where I attach my GoPro and phone, which I put in an iPhone dry bag, and around the middle it has metal loops for hooking in a seat or whatever else you might want to strap down.

If you want to pimp your ride and make your day easier, don’t forget these:

Benefits of an Inflatable SUP (v Regular)

  • It fits in the back seat of any car and weighs about 40 lbs in the bag. At about 30 x 17 inches, it can also be easily stored.
  • Because of its size and convenience, I can carry it, transport it, and pump it up by myself, unlike a massive two-person canoe. It takes me about 10 minutes or less to pump it up to the suggested 14 PSI (the pump has a gauge on it).
  • The fin is easy to attach, it comes with a “pin” that you just put through the hole and it clicks into place, and you just pull it out when you’re putting it away. Update: The fins are even easier to attach now, no pins, just a tiny lever that loosens and tightens to hold them in place.

Stability. If I choose to try yoga, or get into waves a little bigger than I’m comfortable with, I choose to have a longer board to lessen my chances of falling in. Simple as that!
