12 Photos of Glacier National Park That Will Make You Want to Drop Everything and Go

September 14, 20150

In the summer of 2015, a friend and I had two nights and one day to spend in Glacier National Park, which may not seem like enough (and I would agree), but as far as a one-day itinerary goes, we absolutely nailed it.

We drove up the east side from Bozeman and stayed at Brownies Hostel in East Glacier Park, just 8 miles from the Two Medicine entrance and 30 miles from the St. Mary entrance to Glacier National Park. Our plan was to drive the Going to the Sun Road to the west entrance, do a couple of hikes along the way, and stay at Fish Creek campground on Lake McDonald the second night (this is one of the only campgrounds you can reserve ahead of time in Glacier National Park).

We started our day with breakfast at Whistle Stop Restaurant, grabbed lunches to go from the Brownies Hostel bakery, and headed for St. Mary. This was our day:

Two Medicine Lake
The drive in past Two Medicine.
St Mary Entrance Glacier National Park
St. Mary entrance, just a little bit giddy in anticipation.
Going to the Sun Road

Rising Sun Saint Mary Lake Glacier
First stop at Rising Sun on Saint Mary Lake.
Saint Mary Lake Glacier
We drove past this point and saw several cars pulled over, so we decided to double back and see what the fuss was about. It was THIS view of Saint Mary Lake. Worth it.
Going to the Sun Road Views
Continuing on Going to the Sun Road, we made a few stops just to soak it all in.

Hidden Lake Hat Mountain Glacier
Our first hike: Hidden Lake, from Logan Pass Visitor Center, complete with mountain goats. About 3 miles round trip to this overlook and back.
Mountain Goats Glacier
The mountain goats were seemingly everywhere on this hike.
Glacier National Park Brilliance
God’s Country, a moment and view I will never forget.
Wildflowers Glacier National Park
Logan Pass. Wildflowers in bloom in every direction.
Avalanche Lake Glacier
Our second hike: Avalanche Lake, from the Trail of the Cedars trailhead just 5.5 miles east of Lake McDonald Lodge. About 4.5 miles round trip and absolutely, 100% worth every step. I could have stayed here for hours.

We arrived at Fish Creek campground with enough sunlight to set up camp and head into West Glacier for dinner before starting a campfire, making s’mores, and reflecting on our incredible day in the park. Glacier is one of those places that should be on everyone’s bucket list, even if you only have one day to spend there. I already can’t wait to go back.
